About the Office of Recycling

With a team of educators and other dedicated professionals, the DC DPW - Office of Recycling administers a variety of programs vital to the district’s environment, public safety, and economy. The services provided by the Office of Recycling are designed to balance today's needs with tomorrow's obligations by fostering both environmental sensitivity and economic sensibility.

The Office of Recycling is striving to develop one of the nation’s leading environmental models promoting sustainable resource management throughout the District by campaigning for residents and businesses to:
  • rethink how your actions affect the amount of waste produced and what you could do to positively change your actions
  • reduce resource consumption
  • maximize resource reuse
  • increase the percentage of waste they recycle
We work at minimizing waste by affecting attitudinal and behavioral change through:
  • education and public awareness campaigns
  • cross-sectoral partnerships
  • environmental resources and information provision
  • training and events
  • research and policy development
The DC Solid Waste Management and Multi-Material Recycling Act of 1988 established a goal of recycling 45% of the district's municipal solid waste by October 1, 2004.
